Congrats, How's it been going? you're lucky to ba able to flair at work. My current workplace is a restaurant with a bar in it. I Florida on the outskirts of Orlando and near Kennedy Space Center (KSC) so we have a lot of tourist traffic as well as our loyal regulars..It's nice except my bosses keep scheduling me to waitress when I am so over it. Any advice on that one? Things I can say to them to get away from waiting tables altogether. As for flair at work, the walking space is so narrow even Delpech would have a rough time with it back there. Wait......... on second hand only Delpech could flair back there. Plus they bitch at us about safety regulation and state/county codes blah blah blah fake legal jargin. They could at least tell the truth. One day I will be moving and I will look for a flair bar to work at. This day is a long way off still so in the meantime I will practice at home.

Have you been down to Tampa recently to check out the flair bartenders at the Seminole Hard Rock Casino? They all work nights at the center bar, it should be pretty impressive to watch. Also, there is the Bar Wars competition in West Palm Beach in September.
My job? This is it. To spread the word on flair. The fact that they pay me for it is even cooler.

That sounds great and all but I'm on the other side of I-4 from Tampa! I was thinking East Orlando or Daytona Bch area even Cocoa Bch or Melbourne. I think I heard about that comp. Is it ending in The Keys? Kinda like a 'Battle of the Bars' tour..The nearest I have heard of (to me) is in Altemonte Springs but it's mostly a bar school w/flair introductory. The funny part about that is it's affiliated with Harvard. Can you imagine an Ivy league bartending degree..in my post degree world I could bragg...."Yeah I have a degree from Harvard.." ;)sheeesh well I don't mean to plug them so I'll stop. I just find it funny.

There are a few different competitions in Florida right now and they are easy to get confused. The competition in the Keys was held earlier this year at the Isle of Morada (sp?). There is also a monthly competition in Tampa called the Showcase, with a finals in January. Then there is Barwarz V in West Palm Beach in late September, followed by the big one, Quest, in Orlando late October. Hope this helps.

MIKE....Sorry I was trying to go back and modify that last post I made but some tech. reason why I can't....I wanted to add a thanks to you for finding info on that comp. I think it's at Disney's Pleasure Island now do you know if I'd have to pay DPI's admission as well as the Quest fee, simply to watch not compete. I guess I could call myself and find out..Just wanted to say THANKS

Well, the contracts have yet to be signed for the new Quest, but they are dealing with Universal right now and running into some problems. The old Quest (1992?-2001) was held on Pleasure Island at Disney. Back then, you did not need to pay admission to Pleasure Island until like 8pm. So if you were there all day to watch the qualifiers, it was free. Not sure how it will work out this year, it will depend on the host location. If you want the latest news, be sure to register with the Flair Bartenders Association (FBA) at www.barflair.org. They have regular updates sent out by email on big events like the upcoming Quest. This year should be an amazing show! Mike

I think that the FBA membership card will help with getting into the competitions. Ya know the one problem is that I may get the packet after the Quest show. Well the bonus can be that I will finally have a network to try to find a bar that's more suited to my interests of becoming the best I can be. Right now I take empty bottles home and then I fill them 1/4 full and practice. A couple of times I've had to clean the broken glass out of my wet carpet, not fun. So then I have also used these plastic grenadine bottles that are great but can crack and leak. My favorite is this Lady Velvet Butterscotch Schnapps bottle from the liquor store. Nice weight when 1/3 filled. Anyway I was noticing the different weights and wondered what the standard weight is that you use. Or is this top secret Flairco info?

Actually, the qualifying rounds in the past were open to anyone and everyone, whether they were an FBA member or not. This encourages more people to come out and watch, then interact with their favorite bartenders. I would expect it to be the same again this year, open to all for the qualifying rounds, tickets for the finals.
It is no secret that a Flairco bottle weighs approximately the same as an empty bottle. When it was first created, we took the dimensions and weights of our ten favorite bottles to flip and averaged them to get the Flairco bottle. That weight has been adjusted slightly over time (variances were decreased) and now the bottle should come in at 1lb, plus or minus about 10%. As the bottle is hollow, you can add water to whatever level you practice with and see what moves will spill and which will not.
Shameless plug time. If you are interested, our biggest distributor is based in Florida, Barproducts.com. You can order online (www.barproducts.com) or call 1-800-BLOODY MARY. Also, if you are an FBA member, you can order through the FBA website and receive 10% off.
Hope this helps!

Well, good to join you bar expert. I come from indonesia and now i am working on board the cruise ship named Pacific sky in south pacific waters as a bar supervisor. We have 7 bars and our bar are not design for flaring to done so its a little bit too narrow. Maybe for you guys it wont be a matter but for me with lack of skills in flaring would be so difficult.
But now i have this address to broaden up and upgrade my skill in flaring. thanks flairschool. Look forward to have reply from you guys.
