I just today handed my notice in at my Current Bar (NTK) and am moving full time to Club Sanuk where Ive been working for a few months while NTK was being refurbed. For anyone who doesn't know the story NTK has entered a massive £1.5 Million refurb to put it back on top of the Late Bar scene. While this was going on I asked around for work and ended up at Club Sanuk. Now this move was meant to be temporary but they have now offered me a stupid package to stay (the exact words were whatever I want?!?!?!) Now since we closed for the refurb 10 weeks ago people have begged me to stay at Sanuk and since its Privatly owned there's more freedom, spirit wise, flair wise etc. Also I found out my manager at NTK Mick Sugden is leaving to move to Spain. Me and Mick have been great friends for many years and without him in my corner there isn't much left for me. He's the guy who would fund my cocktail competitions, pay for my travel and expences etc. Basically without him I'll get no backing financially or personally as he has a lot of sway with the Brewery. So things are moving forward, I'll be Flair training at Sanuk so there will be a few new faces on the board soon. I am gonna be seriously competing soon with all the extra practice I'll need to put in. If anyone is interest my new club is www.clubsanuk.co.ukif you want to see the new NTK get Class magazine, The Venue or any of around 20 industry magazines. My Girlfriend is doing the photography which is brilliant so keep your eyes peeled. Cheers Rob.L

Congrats Bro on your move,
You really cant beat working for an independent company, Im in a similar position and my bosses let me do, let me stock, let me sell whatever the hell I want as long as they see the grren at the end of the week and the stocks add up, they are happy!
The pay is not that great and blowing my own trumpet Im probably worth a little more, but you cant put a price on job satisfaction, I would rateher be in my position than working for some chain where every detail has to be done by the book.
Really need to come up and see you sometime this year, get together for a flair-about and maybe you can share some of your mixology skills (my weak point lol)
Good Luck
Cheers

*update*....'kay made my decision to be professional and stick to the first job. I phoned to decline the second offer and the guy on the line (not the same one I interviewed with) was unecessarrily rude saying..."yeah I get it you don't want to work here you're better than us whatever..." I freaked out saying EXCUSE me....and then asked for the mnger on duty...then he says "huh-huh had you going.." but part of me thinks he wasn't well imagine this guy answering the phone at your bar, representing you etc. Makes me think I made the right decision.

Yeah I did make the right choice, love the job I stayed with. I did a recap the following day with the new venue's barmanager, as it turns out he never got my message and the joker on the phone either....(1)didn't actually work there and was someone at the bartop helping themselves to the phone OR (2)was a certian bartender they're having problems with and may have already let go. The new venue bar manager and I get along famously, should I need that job in the future I think it's safe to say that option is still available to me. Until then I can familiarize myself as a patron. Sure, I wouldn't be one of the opening crew but I'm so satisfied where I am now that I don't see the urgency to run off to a new venue. Just had new job jitters while getting a wonderful offer at the same time clouded my judgement. At the end of the day I come to find both jobs are pretty equal (tips and all) I'll have a clean conscience knowing I didn't sell out just for money. I also learned I have a damn strong work ethic and that's what I'm most proud of.

dont you guys sometimes just get over being barterders and wanna actually go to study or something and do a job that takes a little more brain power than mixing drinks for the rich and famous?

We all do this trade because we love it, but not all of us work solely in the industry. I know for a fact that a few are the members here are studying and at college using bartending as a release from that.
I myself outside of this industry own my own printing business and run this website, another member Summie is a barrister/lawyer and runs a bar consultancy business in his spare time.
When youa re stuck behind a desk all day pen pushing, it makes a great change to get out and meet people and get paid for it, can it be any better!
Cheers

To our guest- Bartending is not where I've sstarted it's where I am now. You see I have a degree in business management with a minor in Interior Design & Spatial Planning I used to be a Theater Manager (for 4 years) where I was chosen, because of my expertise, to participate with an elite team. Going from theater to theater across the U.S. as part of a problem solving team called the Five Star Team; We developed teamwork and upselling skills. I've also taken a personal interest in foreign language...espically german "Ich speche deutsch...unsoweite" as well as music apriciation. Between all of this I still have the time to spend time with my adoring husband of 5 years. I have a very well rounded life and think that compared to all other careers THIS has given me the most insight to who I am as a person. I found my niche......DEAL WITH IT!

I don't actually think the guest was trying to cause trouble. I think that I reach the point where I am going to quit and get a day job about every 4 years. I think its a point where I start to feel stagnent, the bar Im working in has given all it can and I've put in everything I can to it, I then look for a change of scene which usually means a change of venue.
It gives me a chance to show new people my skills who will be genuinly impressed with my work. I find that after working for the same manager for so long it becomes really difficult to surpass there expectations, after a while they expect you to exceed there expectations and then you don't get the rewards or job satisfaction from it.
I also have my bad days where nothing goes right and I just want to jack it all in and get another job that doesn't involve dealing with idiotic drunk people.
My thoughts, Rob.L

wellllll I guess so, but I really take offense to the claim that bartending doesn't take any brain power. As well as people thinking we don't have a personality outside of the bar.

OK - there is nothing wrong with doing bartending because you love it.
I'm sorry if bartending is a fulfilling job where there is always something new to learn, or room to move, portable in terms of being able to work all around the world, satisfying and can be very prosperous.
I sometimes say to my boss at my reg gig - "let me get this right, you wanna pay me to do something I would do at home for free" - I get paid to play!
Some people see bartending as a means to an end, or not very demanding. You can make this job as easy or as hard as you want it to be.
One thing I can assure you of, is that you only get as much back as you put in.
PS I never talk about my day job at work. I find that the people who try and talk my job down, are jealous because their girlfriends have spent the whole night watching me.
peace out
Darren
